What We Use

Vegan Family Meals

When you're busy, finding quality time to connect with your family members can feel challenging amidst the current home-education requirements, work, chores, and meal prep.  Meals are the perfect time to bring everyone together. Our boys say they love meal time because we all get to share about our day.

Cooking is a time to teach your kids about healthy eating, food prep and cleanup, and the nuances of cooking. Taste tests and snippets of information about spices and cooking methods are planting seeds for our young kids to be skillful in the kitchen.  When they're involved in food prep they get invested in eating it too.

When I have time (and patience!) helping hands make dinner a team effort. I often cooked with my daughter and now she's all grown up and a fabulous cook!

Having the right tools to make cooking easy and efficient means you have more energy for your family and for yourself too.  When you're not frustrated with the sub-par performance of dull knives or weak blenders that can't blend a home-made hummus, or relying on unhealthy vegan fast-foods to feed your family because food prep is too hard, you're more likely to make choices that are healthy for your family and the planet.

The right tools make the job easier and when I know I'm feeding my family well, I feel happy knowing I'm giving them the foundation they need to be their best selves.

Over the decades of cooking vegan meals, we've found a few tools we absolutely rely on. We invested in them because we knew it was an investment in our health and well-being. My father taught me to buy high-quality tools once rather than ineffective, low-quality tools I would need to replace multiple times at inopportune moments. This is what we've done in our kitchen.

Spice Grinder

We use this grinder to make homemade spice blends and small batches that would waste cleaning time in the Vitamix. We like this one because the mixing bowl is removable for easy cleaning and it has wet and dry mixing bowls.

Equipment to Make Cooking Indian Food Easier

We believe in using high-quality cooking equipment that we can rely on to provide decades of service. We're not fond of shopping nor throwing broken kitchen gear in the trash. We like efficiency and we don't like to have rarely used kitchen gadgets taking up space in our home. We're sharing the equipment that has survived heavy use over decades of cooking, and our new India specific tools.

Some of our favorite and most used equipment has a higher price tag and we've considered it an investment in our family's health. Having the right tools to prepare delicious food makes cooking easier and more fun, thus encouraging us to save money by dining in more than out.

In this section we're sharing the tools we use most and at least twice per week. If you don't have them you can still make delicious plant-based foods, but they make it easier.

Where to start? If we had to choose just one item to have, we'd invest in a superb knife. Plant-based cooking involves a lot of chopping and a sharp, well-balanced knife makes this a joy. If chopping produce is difficult, you've hobbled yourself before you've even left the gate. Be sure you have a great knife and get sharpened with it. The knife we share below is the exact knife we use every day. We love it!

There are a few pieces of kitchen equipment that make cooking easier in general, and a couple of items that are specific to Indian food.
