We survived our Amazon adventure to “Triple Threat Lake” and learned a few life lessons along the way.
Here's how it went down...
A couple of years ago we were on a a boat trip down the Napo River (tributary of the Amazon) out of Coca, Ecuador with a salty dog of a guide whose respect was not easily earned.
Our day two destination: Limoncocha Lake (aka Triple Threat Lake) in the Amazon Basin that looked calm and even a bit boring until…
Threat 1: We started fishing for Piranha. Yes, we were trying to attract those sharp-toothed, flesh eating schools of fish that devour people in the movies.
Threat 2: Lulled by a sherbet sunset and the galaxy of fireflies that ignited the floating greenery would have had us oooing and ahhing except that we would have suffocated with the clouds of mosquitoes that appeared out of no where. One deet-free night on the water and we would have been mummified.
Threat 3: Trusting (praying?) that our wee little boat would safely guide us through the inky blackness back to the safety of land (ha!), we slowly cruised along the shore looking, yes looking, for the glowing red eyes of the apparently quite healthy population of black caiman along the shoreline.
Incredible experience, but not what we’d opt in for every day.
Like health, we can dip outside of normal and enjoy some risk now and then, but if we do it every day our chances of experiencing a significant negative event increase, especially when we don’t really know what we’re doing.

Flirt with danger and relish risks-- occasionally.
The memorable family barbecue or the birthday cake that rocked your world are fine… Just don’t eat them every day.
